What is a Green building? According to the U.S. Green Building Council, it is, ‘The careful design, construction, operation, and reuse or removal of the build environment in an environmentally, energy-efficient and sustainable manner’.
What is LEED? LEED is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. A Green Building Rating System™ has been developed to standardize tools and performance criteria. This third–party certification program gives building owners and developers performance measures in key areas of environmental health. It is difficult to give a complete definition of what makes a product green because there are many attributes that can make a product green including, but not limited to sustainable site development, materials selection, water savings, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.
How does a building become Green certified? A building becomes certified after third-party review of the building’s ability to meet the performance measurement criteria in the key areas of environmental health: Sustainable site development Selection of environmentally friendly materials Use of products that promote water conservation Designs that reduce electricity and energy consumption Indoor products & HVAC that improve environmental quality
Who uses LEED? LEED practices are being used in both privately and publically owned facilities. These practices must be considered and implemented from conception through completion of building by: Architects Construction companies Designers Engineers Government officials Landscaping companies Property managers Real estate professionals
Why should a building be certified as Green? LEED certified buildings will receive a LEED plaque demonstrating the building is environmentally conscience and a healthy environment to work. Building qualifying for certification will realize some or all of the following benefits: Healthier environment for occupants Reduced water consumption Reduced energy costs Reduced waste water Qualify for environmental building incentives Lower cost of ownership due to more efficient operations Increased property value
